It’s Ya Girl’s College Scholarship Masterpost

fvckugh:

jesussbabymomma:

Hello internet civilians! As some of you may or may not know, my name is Dana and I am a high school senior that is ALWAYS on the prowl for trying to get to college for as cheap as possible. I’ve come across 1000′s of scholarships that I simply don’t qualify for, so I thought “hey, why not share these with random people on the internet that don’t know where to start?” You asked the question and only answers you shall receive.

Please remember to credit me for this masterpost because I spent a lot of time and energy on it :)

PLEASE ALSO REMEMBER THAT A SCHOLARSHIP IS WORTHLESS IF YOU DO NOT APPLY FOR IT.

SO DO NOT JUST SAVE THIS POST IN YOUR DRAFTS AND NEVER USE IT. ACTUALLY WRITE AN ESSAY OR FOUR

how to study for big exams

recklesslythirsty:

study beforehand:
Begin to study two weeks before your tests (or even before) so it helps your anxiety and you don’t freak out last minute. Two weeks before your test is the perfect time for you to start studying one hour to an hour and a half each day. This gives you time to prepare and get comfortable with what you have learned.

don’t cram:
It’s fine to review the night before the test but if you try to learn new concepts the night before you will be way too stressed out and will just end up getting anxious + not really learning anything. Don’t procrastinate and start now.

avoid distractions:
When you get really stressed out while studying, or every 30-50 minutes, try to distract yourself for just a couple of minutes (5 minutes). Take a light walk, play with your dog, or just take a minute, listen to music and let your mind wander. Don’t let it get too long though, this is just for you to refresh yourself. Also, make sure to avoid your phone even during your small break. Chances are you are going to get hooked and end up looking through it way more than what you intended to.

manage your time wisely:
Make lists and plan ahead in what you want to study. Create your own study guides if not given one by the teacher and make a study schedule. Begin studying and study harder for the subjects you need to get a better score on, and/or are harder for you to understand. Analyze your exam schedule and begin planning.

  • manage your time using the pomodoro method: what is the pomodoro method? it’s a really effective technique where you set a timer for 25 minutes and you start studying/working, when the timer’s up you take a short 5 minute break (no electronics!) there’s even a few apps on the app store, here are two i recommend:

flat tomato: apple (not available for android so click here for a similar one)

pomodoro time: apple/ similar on android

speak to your teacher:
A few days or a week prior the test, talk to your teacher. Ask them what kind of format the test will mostly be like. (Multiple choice, fill in the blank, etc.) ask them what’s the most important things you need to know and study from and focus more on.

make studying fun: use colors, sketches, foldables, flashcards, online games, etc. anything to spice up how you study!

✧ study methods:

  • read everything from cover to cover: not exactly reading it, but more like skimming through it. it might not work for everyone, but reading it 1 time quickly, not trying to memorize anything personally helps me kind of get the whole idea and what it is talking about.
  •  get a tutor: this is what helped me for math, since I really suck at it. do this if you are willing to pay for one or find someone at school whether it’s a teacher or an older student.
  • youtube: if you don’t like tutors or just don’t want to pay for one, go to youtube. You can get tutoring for free and have concepts explained to you in different ways. If you don’t understand something, you can easily rewind or switch to another video. there’s even programs that their goal is exactly that, helping people for free, like khan academy. (really good one!)
  • study groups: i do a lot better when i study with other people. I am bound to procrastinate if i decide to study by myself. Ask a few friends who you know will study and do understand the subject. If you are easily distracted and prefer to study alone, then go for it.
  • quiz yourself and others: even if you’re asking the questions, hearing the answers and checking them helps to memorize things better.
  •  teach the material to someone else: this can be really effective since when teaching it, you are also teaching yourself and testing if you actually understand what you are talking about. your mind will organize the information in a way that you feel will help the other person understand better.
  • flashcards: good old flashcards. I think having some on hand everywhere is good so you can just grab ‘em on your free time and go through them. they’re great for vocabulary words and concepts. If you don’t want to take the time to write them out then use any app. Like quizlet or studyblue. (you could also use @studyign alternative to flashcards method)

✧  more methods:

  • mind maps
  • outlines of the chapters
  • reviewing old tests
  • studying from your notes
  • taking notes from the book once again.
  • create a questionnaire for you to answer.

✧ motivate yourself: how? well, one way I usually get motivated is by reading school related tips and scrolling through studyblrs. but don’t stay on tumblr!! it doesn’t count as studying.

✧ before the test:

go to school rested: it’s important to let your brain rest. Be sure to at least have 6 hours of sleep before a test. Your health is important, you need energy. DO NOT PULL ALL NIGHTERS.

eat a good breakfast: choose something healthy (at least healthy-ish) that will fill you up and give you energy for the hours you are going to be in school. Don’t believe the “an empty stomach will make you focus better” not true. Some ideas are:

-eggs and sweet potato hash browns
-banana pancakes
-waffles with some peanut butter
-huge fruit smoothie

wear something comfortable: wear an outfit that makes you feel good but it’s also comfortable.

quickly review: just quickly go through any notes or flashcards you had written whenever you have time. During breakfast, while you’re in the car or waiting to get your test.

prepare: make sure to come prepared. A lot of teachers might not allow borrowing during the test. So make sure you have pens, pencil, eraser, liquid paper, calculator, sharpener or anything else at hand.

 ✧ during the test:

READ: go through your test and read everything, then ask your teacher whatever you don’t get. Underline key words in every question so you can organize the problem, making it easier to tackle.

concentrate: don’t let anyone disturb you.

notes: write down things you feel you could easily forget. If it’s a math test, go to the back of your test and write down every formula you remember so when you are faced with a problem you can go back to check. By doing this you clear your mind and you don’t feel as overwhelmed.

take your time: Allow yourself to double-check problems and reread everything. It is not a race.

calm yourself down: breathe, you know this.

* i know a lot of you are already out of exam season but hopefully this can help you for the upcoming year! :)

How to study in College

niccistudies:

  • Take notes in class
Never go to class without some paper and a pen. Writing something down is the first step to remembering it.
  • Get a planner
If you don’t know what you need to study or work on, you’ll never actually do it.Getting into this habit of jumping on work and studying is a hard one to form, but having a planner to remind you is a good way to start.
  • Re-read the notes
I’ve heard it everywhere, the best way to remember material is to re-read it after your class. Sorry to break it to you, but after you first take those notes in class, your job doesn’t end there. Make sure that you re-read your notes, preferably within 24 of when you originally took them. Refresh your mind on the material learned.
  • Re-Write the notes
Now that you’ve re-read the notes, you might have noticed how sloppy they look. Taking notes by hand in class can be daunting, difficult, and rushed. Some of the things you wrote might be in short hand, some might be hard to read, and some might not make any sense. Make them look pretty. Science has backed the fact that writing it down helps you memorize it.
  • Write out the essay prompts ahead of time
I wrote out my entire essay:
introduction, conclusion and all. Then, I wrote out a very simple outline on a blank sheet of paper which covered the basis of the points I cover in the essay. I memorized this first, reading it and writing it over and over and over again. This way, if I couldn’t retain anything else I would at least know the basis of what I was talking about. Then I printed out the essay, and made a highlighting color coded system. I highlighted everything I absolutely needed to get correct and have memorized (such as any statistics or quotes I was including) in pink. I highlighted every point that I needed to include, no matter what phrasing I used, in orange. Finally, I highlighted a few extra points that I would be proud of myself if I memorized in yellow. I read this, re-read this, read it again. Then I gave it to my roommate and tried to recite the entire thing from memory.
  • Consider making flashcards
If you are studying for any class that requires memorization, chances are that flashcards will benefit you. On the blank side, put the keyword or phrase. On the lined side, put the definition or description of that keyword/phrase. This tried and true trick is a great way of quizzing yourself, especially if you are learning a new language or new vocabulary.
  • Try it with music, then try it without it
Music is a fantastic study tool, but it isn’t for everybody. There has been a lot of studies surrounding the fact that music boosts productivity and motivation. If you find that music doesn’t help you, then try turning it off. It’s possible that you trying to force yourself to listen to music all these years has actually been deterring your focus! Everybody is different, so try it out and see if it helps.

strawberryshortcakekitten:

Okay, so I know there's this post floating around about punishments for littles that’s just super controlling that talks about painful ways to punish your little and controlling them so I’m going to make my own post with super safe NON-SEXUAL punishments

(non-painful/safe)

  • Time outs with sensory bottles (perfect for calming down hyper littles)
  • Chores (i mean this is super obvious, I have no idea why the other post didn’t mention this at all. So like cleaning up and dusting and what not)
  • Groundings (electronics, TV, video games, etc. UNLESS THEY NEED THOSE ITEMS! for example, if a little needs their phone because talking to friends helps them with anxiety and depression DONT TAKE IT, ground them from tv instead)
  • Earlier bed times
  • Withhold outings (for example, say you guys were planning on going to the park this weekend but your little misbehaves, simply tell your little that the date is canceled due to their behavior. If their behavior improves over the week surprise them with a trip to the park as planned but on a later day as a reward)
  • standing in a corner for five minutes

Also, be clear about your rules. Don’t be vague about rules or your little will have a hard time following them and be confused about what they did wrong if they happened to break them.

I enjoyed this post, very useful and not harmful to the child. Thank you

“Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use.”- Wendell Johnson

With the half term in full swing, I took some time to sit down and note what I could do different the next term. After racking my brains, this is what I came up with. These are all the things that I’m going to try  in fact, things that I’m going to do next term.I might even print it out and stick it on my wall so that I remember to do it!

Anyway, remember to do work over the half term however also to take a well earned break because this is what half terms are for. It’s for you to take a break and recharge your batteries so that you can karate chop the next term!

Honestly, sometimes I wonder why I say things like “karate chop”? T_T

Honestly, figuring out how you study/learn best will affect whether big or small (you decide on that) how you’ll do whenever you have a test or a quiz and the results that come after. I’m pretty sure we all want to perform well on our tests so we find ways to do so.

We have all the resources; the books, the websites, the apps so it’s a matter figuring out the best way for us to study.

I’ve concluded that where you study, how you study, what you use to study and what you listen to when you study will help you perform best.

1. Find the place most conducive for you to study.

here’s a post by @studyspire on how to find your study spot and a post by @universi-tea on study places

2. Choose/Use the study method that works for you. If you’re a visual or auditory, reading/writing or kinesthetic kind of learner, I think it will be best for you to use the methods for studying that work best on your type.

some posts you can refer to:

study methods and what suits you better by @getstudyblr

3. If you’re type that likes to use highlighters or coloured pens, find out which colour will help you remember best. The way you can determine this is only by your standards. What works best for me are yellow and green fluorescent  highlighters if the text is printed and accent colours if the text is handwritten. You’ll only really know what will work for you with trial and error so experiment. You probably will have an idea on which colours might work for you already so you can try testing it whenever you have a test or a quiz. Quiz if you aren’t comfortable in doing something what you might think might cost you before a test.

4. Are you the digital type, the printed type or handwritten type? What I’m trying to tell you is to use the means that will help you out most. For digital for example, you remember and understand things if you’re reading your notes from your tablet, ipad or computer. Printed is if typing your notes, then printing them and then reading them will help you out more or reading from the book and lastly handwritten, if you think reviewing what your studying for will require you to rewrite your notes, read from your notebook, make flashcards or make mind maps- that you of course hand-wrote will make you perform best in the test, then use whatever method is necessary for you.

5. Are you a solitary learner or a group learner? Do you study best if you work alone or do you have to have a study group with your friends? Work with whoever will help you whether it’s yourself or somebody else.

6. Listen to the sound perfect for you. Most people would listen to classical music some acoustics and others electronic music. I wouldn’t really recommend lyrical music because you end up thinking of the words sung in the song but if it works for you then go ahead. Like in number 3, You’ll only really know what will work for you with trial and error so experiment. You might already have an idea on which might work on you best so choose the best time for you to test it.

some playlists/playlist masterposts for you:

soundtracks for study by @lushstudy
studying and gaming playlists and soundtracks by @studylou

spotify has a lot playlists so you know pick one that interests you and try it out. Music doesn’t work on all people so experiment as well if you work better without.

That’s all I have to say mostly. Manipulate the circumstances whenever you study so you can be at your best when the exam comes. I hope this will have helped you. This is only part of how well we perform on a test. I’m sure we all know that. We still have to sleep early, stay hydrated and eat to keep us at your peak while we study. How we feel particularly on that day and at those moments before and while we take our test also determine our performance so we manage the aspects that we can.

I hope you all slay your exams get the grades you wish to get with all your hard work.

The Full Potential Challenge

Ever wonder what your life would be like if you lived up to your full potential? Would your body be healthier? Your skin clearer? Bank account bigger? I think about these things all the time, and, judging my a previous post, you guys do to. Below is a chart designed to help all of us live up to our full potential. I’ve broken it down into time frames to help keep you from getting overwhelmed. Write the chart down and hang it someplace where you can see it all the time. I will be starting this challenge tomorrow, 9/8. I’ll check in with you guys every Sunday to track my progress. I have specific goals in mind for myself, and you guys should make some too! I really want to know how you guys are doing. Tag your progress posts with #sbfpc so I can track it and take a look. Let’s get to it!

EVERY MORNING

  • Stretch. First thing. Really give your body enough time to wake up. Touch your toes. Roll out your shoulders. Do not hit snooze!
  • Do your full skincare routine. I have mine detailed here, but do whatever works for you and your complexion. Be gentle and consistent.
  • Brush your teeth and floss. I used to be a big floss-skipper too, but you’d be amazed at how dig of a difference it makes. Rinse with a whitening mouthwash. I use one by Crest, and I notice a major difference in my teeth’s overall whiteness in just a few days.
  • Give yourself enough time to get ready. Whether you’re a wash-and-go kind of girl, or someone who spends an hour doing a full contouring routine before class (and either one is fine!), make sure you aren’t rushing. If you need to wake up a few minutes earlier than normal, so be it. Rushing sets an awful, stressed-out tone for the rest of the day. Allow yourself to be relaxed before taking on the day.
  • Eat something. I’m not going to say eat a big breakfast, because some people (myself included) just can’t eat in the morning. But you should eat, or at least bring a little something with you to work or school. If you can’t eat a full breakfast, grab a fruit! You won’t be as hungry come lunch time, making you less likely to gorge yourself.
  • Shower. You can do this at night, in the morning, whatever. Again, this is something you should allow some time for. I don’t wash my hair every day, but I do condition it every day (from the ears down). Scrub yourself with a delicious-smelling body wash. If you shave, make yourself as smooth as a dolphin, dude. If you don’t, then don’t and don’t ever ever ever let anyone make you feel bad or weird about it. When you get out of the shower, wrap yourself in a fluffy towel and totally slather your sexy self with lotion. Top to bottom. Do it as soon as you can post-shower so it can really sink in.
  • Put leave-in condition throughout your damp hair and comb it through.
  • Put on an outfit that makes you feel good! So important!
  • Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
  • Take a look at your daily to-do list. Knock out the most pressing stuff first. Take pride when you cross things off your list.
  • Make your bed! Oh my god, make your bed. Do it. Do it. Do it.

EVERY AFTERNOON

  • Follow the “touch it once” approach. This is a truly life-changing thing. When a task is in front of you, no matter how big or small, just do it right then and there. How many times have you gotten a work email or homework assignment and thought, “Eh, I’ll do it later”? And then later never comes? Once something pops up, do it once. Squash it and be done. Cross things off your list and feel like a badass.
  • Try to go for a walk at lunch. Even one little lap around the block or campus will reenergize you like nobody’s business.
  • Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
  • Be present. This is so hard for me too, but you have to make a major effort to be present in whatever you’re doing. Be engaged and plugged-in and just exist in the moment. Give 100 percent.
  • Be friendly to friends and strangers. A smile goes a long way.
  • Eat something. Eat what you packed for lunch (see below) and take a break from working while you do it. You need “you time”!

EVERY EVENING

  • Take your makeup off as soon as you’re in for the night. Wash your face with your full routine and let your skin have a break.
  • Workout. You can also do this in the morning. Whatever works for you. Make a great playlist and go hard af. Get your cardio in. Get your strength training in. Earn every freaking sweat bead forming on your forehead. Earn your shower!
  • Knock out your homework. Life is infinitely better you don’t have anything hanging over your head. Half the time, the energy and emotion you spent dreading/putting off your work is ten times worse than the work itself.
  • Make a list of what needs to be done tomorrow. It’ll set you up for success the next day, and you won’t forget anything!
  • Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
  • Lay out your clothes for tomorrow. This will save you SO MUCH TIME in the morning omg I can’t even tell you how important this is.
  • Eat something great. And once you’ve decided to be done eating for the night, be done. Brush your teeth so you can’t eat again.
  • After brushing, do a whitening treatment. Whether it’s classic baking soda, a Crest white strip, or a laser. Do something. And floss! Retainers in too, ladies 0:)
  • Relax! Take a few hours to do what YOU want to do. Scroll through Tumblr, binge on some Netflix, FaceTime gossip with your friends, anything. Do whatever makes you happiest.
  • Shut the electronics off an hour before you want to go to bed. Put your phone on sleep mode. If you stare at the screen, it will keep you awake and alert and you won’t be able to fall asleep. A good night’s sleep is crucial for weightless and general happiness lol
  • Do a quick sweep of your room and see if there’s anything you can put away real quick. A clean space is a happy space.
  • Crawl into your bed (aren’t you happy you took the time to make it?!) and read a book by lamplight for a while. When you start to feel sleepy, go to sleep. Don’t push it. You kicked ass today and you deserve rest.

EVERY WEEKEND

  • Do something with your friends. It just has to be one thing. Even if you’re just hanging out at the coffee shop, spending time with your squad will make you a better, happier person.
  • Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
  • Do something just for you. Set your laptop up in the bathroom and watch a Netflix marathon while you take a bubble bath. Buy an old school bottle of Mr. Bubbles ($3 at Target!) and really just soak. Relax. Light a candle.
  • Do something creative. You can read a book, write, blog, draw, code, anything. It just has to be something that speaks to your passion.
  • Track your progress. Just do this once a week so it doesn’t become all-consuming. And remember that non-scale victories are just as important as shedding pounds.
  • Take the time to be grateful. Tell your friend how much you admire her taste in music. Mention to your mom how much you love her cooking and how happy you are that she takes care of you. Thank your teaching after an especially interesting lecture. When you do something awesome, take a moment to admire yourself. Be grateful for even the little things.

Anything I missed? Reblog + add yours! Don’t forget to tag your progress!

this is SO awesome 😄 will def try this tomorrow!!!! 💗
